It’s not just any boat with oars extended into a few inches of questionable water, dry-docked in the middle of a bar, surrounded by acres of Caesars Palace.

“She’s a time machine to our past,” says Branden Powers. As the managing partner of two time-traveling bars beyond the Strip — the Golden Tiki and Evel Pie — Powers is an understandably vocal fan of Cleopatra’s Barge.  The nightspot from 1970 is the last iconic piece of classic Vegas architecture still in use on the Strip (though original casino areas survive at Caesars and the Tropicana). “They keep destroying it. If I wanted to go on vacation and stay in an airport, there’s plenty of places now,” Powers says. But the Barge?

“She endured the test of time,” he says. “Vegas needs more Vegas....”

TOP OF THE POP

You can thank David Perrico and Pop Strings Orchestra for the delay in the long-anticipated renovation of Cleopatra’s Barge at Caesars Palace. Just this week, Perrico signed a contract extension with Caesars Entertainment to continue headlining at the hotspot for another year. Pop Strings also will continue its 10 p.m.-midnight Thursdays-Fridays-Saturdays schedule....

There is no cover for these shows; it will soon cost more to park at Caesars than to see this great band of top-notch musicians and singers.

Eventually, plans for the Barge include partnering with a well-known nightclub . But as long as Perrico and fellow late-night act Zowie Bowie (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) are making waves behind the moat, there is no hurry to shut it down and spruce it up.

Outdoor festivals have descended on VegasVille over the past two weekends, with Life is Beautiful downtown last weekend and Route 91 Harvest at the Village this weekend. But we ducked inside, where “The Barge” rocks anew.

The first show in the post-Matt Goss era at Caesars Palace played out late Saturday night, and it was a barn-burner (or barge-burner) from David Perrico’s Pop Strings orchestra. For the first time since Goss took over in 2010 with his largely closed-off, ticketed show, the famed Cleopatra’s Barge threw open the curtains so a mass of folks could amble in for a free show.

The scene, and act, were worth the trip. Perrico’s band, which also plays the Lounge at the Palms and Cabaret Jazz at the Smith Center, features a rotation of top Vegas singers – Sina Foley, onstage Saturday; Lily Arce (who swings in “O” at the Bellagio); Noybel Gorgoy of Holmes’ “Between The Lines” at Palazzo Theater, and Rockie Brown of the Rockie Brown Band. The Pop Strings gig runs Thursdays through Saturdays, 10 p.m.-midnight, in October....
